Looks like I wasn’t the only one who wanted to see what a DSLR-based shoulder mount would look like. From Zacuto, makers of shiny red things that cost more than your camera:


The matte box isn’t just to impress the clients. If you want to shoot wide-open with a 1/48 shutter regardless of lighting conditions, you’d better be prepared to dial in exposure with ISO and ND. Screwing threaded filters on and off gets old quick. And grad filters will be your friend.

I would think that low weight would now be a factor... meaning that the slightest touch of that follow-focus wheel may be detectable in the image... may need to add more weight to this rig... all that rigginess for a dinky little SLR! Reminds me of VGER! It's the VGER-cam.

I really like the way that looks.

My view, however, as a live video production operator (Music festivals, company conferences, House of Worship) the ability for a DSLR type camera to be hand held on stage may be limited by ergonomics and as the above commentator said: weight.

However for steadi-cam use, tripod use a setup like that wouldn't be too bad.

Of course these type of DSLR's aren't aimed for live on-stage video use or for capture of news footage. But something to keep in mind I suppose.

this made me think about the old interchangeable viewfinders that all the slr cameras could use, nowadays most dslr cameras have them stuck

with a rig like this, and the rods sticking out underneath, you can no longer look through the eyepiece

if they made the viewfinder interchangeable perhaps it could be possible for a third party to build an optical viewfinder that functioned like a regular movie camera viewfinder that would stick out on the side

we used to put cameras on our shoulder to get extra stability, ease the weight load and keep the viewfinder at the eye. Now we dont have to worry about weight just stbility and the veiw, its time to start thinking out of the box or off the shoulder.
something like an under over shoulder rig machine gun style with an extended viewfinder or LCD facing at you.
Exciting innovation ahead!

With mirror moved out of the way for the sensor you're not able to use the eyepiece anyway.

Looks like my shine red rig was a good investment after all...
