Mostly Coherent

I was the guest host on this week’s Mostly Photo show with Leo Laporte and Lisa Bettany. We talked about shooting stills and video and getting the most out of post-processing, and I showed off some video gear from Redrock Micro and Zacuto. I’ve been a huge fan of Leo’s entrepreneurial empire and Lisa’s photography for years, so it was a blast getting to hang with them.

Click the photos to jump directly to my three tips:

I used this shot to talk about what I call “decoy shooting.” Canon 5D, 50mm F1.4.

I used this shot as an example of achieving apealing (i.e porange) skin tones. Canon 5D Mark II, 50mm F1.2L.

I used this shot as an example of color contrast, and showed how to use the split-tone controls in Adobe Lightroom to achieve this look. This image is available as a free iPad wallpaper here. Canon 5D, 24–105 F4L.

Lisa very kindly mentioned my Fact, Moment, Light post. Please do check it out if you’re a new visitor to Prolost!

i also used lightroom a lot (on both win and mac)
then I discovered Aperture 3
it's a very powerful tool.. a lot more powerful than lightroom.
i love the rgb curves brick and the fact you can add more than 1 brick.
you can also have textures overlay type of effects.
here i wrote a little blog post about textures in aperture

very entertaining and inspiring, as always :)

BUT: have you actually tried the VC version of the tamron 17-50? it's a completely different design from the 17-50 non-VC, and it is extremely soft, at all focal lengths

it features on lensrental's list of "stuff I wish I'd never bought"

Something weird. In one shot of the interview I can see a Macbook Pro (00:24:38) in front of you and in another shot I see a iMac (00:30:19)?

Stu,
You might not know how much some of us appreciate you and your willingness to share. I learned so much in this video. The lightroom techniques, the ideas for creating an inspiration folder from dvd screen caps,( I have several inspiration folders, analog and digital) and most importantly, and I do not know if this is true, your humility. Thanks for doing this and thanks to Leo and Lisa for putting you on.

Be well

Laurence

I really enjoyed the post. Like others have said, thanks for sharing your knowledge for the rest of us!

I noticed that you said your workflow from FCP to AE is via Premiere. Have you tried the AE script from Popcorn Island.com? It works like Automatic Duck, but its FREE. It'll take out a step of going to Preimere to get to AE. I use this script all the time; it's a lifesaver.

If you use it, let me know what you think.

Hi Stu. Enjoyed the video spot. I checked out Lisa's app as a result (don't worry I've already got a couple of yours). Interesting stuff. Enjoyed the peek into Lightroom ( I use Aperture but am being lured by your post to add Adobe back to my workflow.

Some good insights into putting together a film rig. Been researching gear and looking at how to build my own.

One thing...the sponsorship ad for the Ford monster Leo was pimping. 25mpg!? I live in England where gas (petrol )costs over 8 dollars a gallon. You couldn't sell a car that crap in this country. I cannot believe that America is still making cars with mileage ratings this bad...and Leo said it was best in class! No wonder most US automakers are on the brink.

Rant in E minor over...great spot and you should do more things like that. I'll be very interested in seeing what you do with your GH2. Lots of pics and video please. I recently picked up a (ahem) hackable GH1 which has blown my socks off with its size/video power capability.

Thanks
