Lars - ditto.

Can't wait to put this to the test.

WIll indie looks presets work with this upgrade or is that something that will need to be updated?

May 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJustin

nevermind.. just realized MB LOOKS is coming soon.

May 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJustin

Excellent work indeed as the availability of plugs is key to 64-bit goodness. Glad to see Echospace on the list as I have need for it unfettered in CS5.

Yep looks pls.

Now, if only I could get bloomin' CS5 to install!

Epic amounts of errors on my Mac when installing the AE CS5 trial :(

Looks?

So I'm planning to buy the Creative Suite 5 Production Premium (Mac) but you don't have that in your various Adobe stores. Can you add it and get a little "taste" for yourself?

Rather, And some of Red Giant is there on day one, would be a little more accurate.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question, but the camera posts were so old so I decided to give it a try.

Can someone tell me the advantage of primes? I'm a noob to cinematography and all I know is primes usually can have big apertures, allowing shallow DOF.

For cinema, is the zooming not used as much? If you can't zoom, isn't that a hassle of staying at a certain distance? (wow, I don't know the answer and the question already looks super amateurish)

Thanks to anyone who replies this probably ill-positioned comment. And if anyone can introduce a forum that is better suited for my question, I am grateful.

@Albert

The Rebel Cafe would probably be more appropriate for your question:
http://rebelsguide.com/forum/index.php

But while at it, here's my take on your question;
(Btw, I'm no pro either so everything here is just merely my opinion)

First off, about this quote:
>If you can't zoom, isn't that a hassle of staying at a certain distance?

When was the last time you saw a lot of zooming going on during a scene in a movie? I forgot where I read this (probably here somewhere at prolost or in The DV Revels Guide) but, zooming is one of those things that require a lot of care in its execution because it can easily remind the audience that a camera exists between them and the world that they are viewing. If you ask me, in terms of story-telling (making the audience care about your stories world), this is almost as detrimental as seeing a boom-mic dip into a scene. There is no "story" anymore, just actors on a set, being shot with a video camera.

Also, as far as I know, the fastest zoom lens's are usually F2.8, and depending on the scene you're trying to shoot, the DOF just might not be shallow enough. If that's the case you have no choice but to go with a prime. Also, faster lens' allow you to shoot in darker places which is always a plus, especially if lighting conditions are out of your control.

You'll probably get a better feel for all this if you just simply play around with a faster prime. If you're going Canon, the 50mm F1.8 is only a hundred dollars. It's really cheaply made (some even call it "disposable") but the optics are solid, so if some reason renting isn't an option, you might wanna go with that one. =D

Thanks, I just got ordered the 50mm 1.8. But the t2i rebel is on backorder at Amazon.

Thanks a lot Alice!

Will Red Giant create cuda accelerated plugins now that render-free is all the rage?

@ Albert
I could write a novel about primes, but your best answers are
here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_lens

If in doubt, or need some quick answers Google the subject and add Wiki to your search criteria, In 999% of the time Wiki will fed your brain :)

@ Albert #2
I recently purchased 2 Sigma (Canon EOS Mount) lenses 50mm f/1.4 & 28mm f/1.8
and I'm ecstatic with the results on my 5D Mark II, The 50mm is bar far sharper than Canons 50mm, at least in my test results on a full frame camera.

i find it a little disappointing that this has almost become a pure advertisement blog, used to be really interesting

Hi Stu,

I just had a discussion with Jason Levine from Adobe on CS5: See http://www.vimeo.com/11369451. Jason claimed that on opening compressed footage in PPro the files would be translated as a 32-bit 4:2:2 (or 4:4:4) file. So aside from fast(er) playback with the use of Mercury technology, PPro would enable you to grade the footage as if it were an on-the-fly interpolated RAW file. However, you could only use the built-in accelerated color grading effects for this purpose, not external applications such as Magic Bullet Looks or Mojo.

Are these claims true? If no, why not? If yes, would it be possible for Red Giant to make MBL or Mojo accelerated as well?

May 13, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRichard

Hey Stu,

I ordered the SD card from your Prolost store, and it says "up to 16mb/s" Is that fast enough for the t2i HD video? I just got the t2i, and haven't had a chance to experiment.

I also checked the Transcend Ordering Information that was on this card / packaging included with the sd card, and realized there was an SD card for HD Video, part number ending in SDHC6V, but the one I got was SDHC6.

There was a note next to the my product that says, MLC. Not really sure what this means...

Is any of the above of any concern?

Thanks.

May 16, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAlbert

Richard, CUDA-native love is not open to 3rd parties, so maybe the next time you're chatting with an Adobe friend, you could ask for it!

Albert, your new SD card should work perfectly for Rebel T2i video.

Hi Stu,

Thanks, I just posted another request out to Jason.

Other readers from this blog should do so as well... perhaps it helps...

Thanks Stu!

I bought the updated Red Giant Looks plug-in and am very disappointed in Red Giant's lack of support for GPU acceleration in the Mercury Playback Engine (MPE). Since most Looks users get addicted and end up using it for most everything, that coveted yellow line simply disappears forever and all the other virtues of MPE diminish along with it. (The goal was to eliminate that tiresome stage of rendering.) There is a claim here that developers are locked out from tapping into it. I'm skeptical. Unless that claim is backed by actual knowledge from Adobe itself, I think the community should lay on the pressure, consistently, for developers to not just go with the bare minimum effort of making plug-ins compatible, but moreso up to spec. The current spec from my perspective is that all plug-ins should be coded for GPU acceleration per MPE.

If most of the suites are CS5-ready, then why does Looksbuilder appear to be a 32-bit application in my Task Manager? It clearly says "Looksbuilder.exe *32". Are you planning on making this a native 64-bit application?

June 23, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRichard

It wouldn't make much difference to make the actual standalone LooksBuilder app 64-bit. The issue here was compatibility, not some kind of 64-bit magic beans.
