7Days

By all indications, the 7D begins shipping next week. Amazon is once again accepting pre-orders. I’ll let you know when I get mine!

Reader Comments (23)

Excited to see mine arrive as well: I wonder if there will be any significant changes from the preproduction to the production model?

Hey Stu, your blog/website is one of the 9 I visit every morning. It has been for quite some time.

As much as I love gear, I am way more interested in the work that you're doing (or the work that inspires you). The LX3, GH1, 5D, 7D, Scarlet, or whatever; there will always be something around the corner.

While I think it's important (and fun) to learn about kit, I get way more out of the posts which apply said kit. i.e "With the 7D You Might Just Be Forced to Use Your Filmmaking" or "All Directors Should Be Animators First"

I don't mean to be negative, and I am fully aware that I don't have to read it. Just some feedback.

Yo.

Do you get a commission or something if we use that link? I already preordered mine D:

September 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSean Duran

I ordered mine from your link as well. My way of giving back to your great site.

September 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDave Grumme

Thanks Stu, I was wondering when this thing was coming out...so glad I pre ordered...

Hey Sean, yes, I do get a small affiliate percentage from Amazon when you buy through links on this site. It's one way that you can support ProLost.

In fact, the "Support ProLost" link at the top right is nothing more than a page with an Amazon and B&H ad for you to begin your shopping if you so choose.

Also, I understand why Ken said what he did, but these new cams that are coming out are breaking so many molds, we have to be talking about them. Because, they are the tools we're going to be using to tell our stories. I think as long as there's a balance between tech stuff, and film theory/approach, it's all good.

I am just as excited as you are stu! I haven't ordered mine yet (ill use the prolost link when I do though) im waiting to hear some reviews. Just about every sign points to this being the camera for me.

Kinda regretting not having already ordered, my next shoot is RED all at 50fps...this is the perfect B Cam. Hey as soon as they're out ill be renting and ranting too no doubt. I've heard Canon is building another factory just to keep up with demand for this and the 5D

Just had a call from Warehouse Express here in the UK. They told me mine should be here by Tuesday. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Stu, I'll remember for next time! Might as well help somebody out while I shop!

Looks like Canada may be getting the camera first: Vistek and a few other Toronto stores have them in stock now but aren't allowed to start selling them until 12:01am this morning.

My Pre-order is with Henry's.... hoping to get my camera SOON!

September 25, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEric Ferguson

The camera is now for sale in parts of the world close to Japan. A fellow named Dan Chung has already purchased it and cut a short film with it.... really beautiful footage, a la "Dublin's people" but this time, in Beijing!

For ISO 6400 it looks unbelievably good at 720p on Vimeo. Here's the link:

SOOOOOO EXCITED to get this camera... Come on Henry's, let's get these things shipping in Canada!

@Eric Ferguson - Henry's downtown on Queen has the 7D in stock as we speak for in-store shopping. Saw them just an hour ago. They were in two days ago, according to the staff.

Max, I hear you, sometimes I wish I could direct Stu to write about this or that other issue. I've been looking at some other blogs, like HDforIndies.com or ProVideoCoalition.com, to cover more specific filmmaking issues (like how to or whether one can make any money back from a film). It's easy to forget that there are all sorts of other people covering the maelstrom that is digital filmmaking.
I think the reason I check Stu's blog first, though, is that his writing voice is a great balance of information, humor, and entertainment. It's why I keep rereading the first chapter of the DV Rebel Guide, in between reads of my other books: It's like a paperback pep talk.

Should I get the $200 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens which you can get with it?

I'll primarily be shooting short movies, and will unlikely ever grow the lens collection above what can be bought for combined $1,500. I currently have no lenses.

Under what circumstances would that lens be appropriate?

Cheers

September 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterValiente

Hi Vallente,

No I would not recommend getting that lens. The only reasons to endure the numerous limitations of a VSLR are DOF control and low-light performance, both of which you severely limit with that kit lens.

I recommend you follow the suggestion of reader David in the comments on the "You Might Have to Use Your Filmmaking" post and go with the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS, or maybe the soon-to-be-released Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC.

Got the cam this afternoon, MAN is it a beautiful piece of kit. Feels like a 5D in your hand, not an xxD camera. Tested out the weather sealing on the camera in the storm tonight: editing the footage now.

The 7D has found its way to New Zealand, I have just picked mine up.

If anyone wants to advice on the best workflow for Premiere Pro on a PC I would be grateful.

We're so totally exited by a new camera that is able to shoot in h.264.... With reason I think. I'm really curious about what is coming in ten years. RED will probably not survive that long with these new and powerful little beasts coming even if they've writen the first song.

When am I gonna hold a little camera that is able to capture "films" with a decent codec?

Place your bet... The race as begun.

The only sad thing is the lack of metadata in those files. If Canon of Nikon want to kick ass, they need to invest in giving those files a post-poroduction identity.

It's really difficult to work with big post-production facility with that kind of files. I'm talking for the online editing and film transfert. It's costing a lot just for the processing. I know that this is made for people to make their "home movies"; but if we want our movie to enter in the festival and distribution phase, metadata are the key. And even for "simple" editing, the metadata is really important to keep a good track of our job and give us an incredible security... It would be very interresting if it was possible to work like the XDCam do... It's really one of the best file base format for the editing. Not the most beautiful, but the easiest the edit for sure... A SD proxie and an originial on the same card. Edit right away the shooting.

Oh yeah...
