Now featuring just one Ninja claw

When asked to describe shooting video with the Canon 5D Mark II, I responded that it was like being offered a backrub by a supermodel — who’s wearing Ninja climbing claws. In other words, it seems like a gift from heaven at first glance, but the actual experience is pain unimaginable. But still, you get to hang out with a supermodel…

Today one claw has been removed. Canon announced and released a firmware update that enables manual control of shutter, aperture, and ISO in video mode.

But we are still limited to 30p. No mention of 24p in the announcement.

I’ve been accused of being a “fan” of shooting video with the 5D Mark II. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, what I said was “With 24p and manual exposure control this camera would be of use. Without those adjustments, it’s a tantalizing but ultimately frustrating curiosity to the DV Rebel.”

So for the record, the Canon 5D Mark II is still not “of use” to DV Rebel filmmakers.

(Unless your whole film is in 25% slow motion!)

So, thanks Canon, sincerely, for listening, and for getting us what you could, when you could.

But your work is not done.

A camera that does not shoot 24p is not an acceptable filmmaking tool.

according to the guy on this website 24p on the gh1 is useless and oh well see for yourself

http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-18192-Panasonic+GH1%2C+a+Stunning+Video+Camera+in+a+Good+DSLR%3A++Review.html

well, he didn't say it was useless, but rather "less sharp and colorful", which may mean there are no in camera effects added in this mode. which is a good thing if you're going to post with your footage:]

on that site, he also said "Don't care about the 24p, really... This is useless since you can go to 24p in post prod."
...so, I'll take that review with a BIG grain of salt.

As Sprio just said, and as some other insiders elsewhere have said, 24p is expected to arrive as well. It's just unknown when it will arrive and how it will be implemented. From the way some people were making it sound like it was their 24F that's in their Prosumer HD cams. We'll see.

I have been watching the prices for months, at my local dealer, the canon estore and bhphoto. What canon did was raise their prices. Just before the “offer” came out canon and all their dealers raised the price by the exact amount of the discount. I was very disappointed and more than a little irritated to find this out when I got my new 70-200mm thinking I was getting a deal.

Whoa is me ;)
