In case you were wondering...
Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 2:04AM This is what 1920x1080 looks like in a 28K 3:1 aspect field:
A 90mm lens would have a 92º horizontal Angle Of View on this 186mm-wide sensor, roughly equivalent to a 12mm lens on the current RED One.
If you click on the image above it won't fit on a 30" Apple Cinema Display. And it's 1/8 res.
An 8-bit 28,000 x 9,334 image would be roughly 748 megabytes in Photoshop.
This isn't an imager size that RED made up, it's used in crazy panoramic cameras.

The screen mag just be too big to contain in an enclosure. As for processing, maybe you can offline at 4K hahahahaha

A sensor that records images too big to display does beg the question, what would you use it for, realistically? Matte painting source material? Action sequence master shots? Hubble Deep Field 2?
Or is it just a case of "because we can"?
The 617 is going to play havoc with your Sensor Size Cheat Sheet, Stu.
I think the real genius in the 617 is that you can set it up with a relatively inexpensive tripod and a reaaaally wide lens, then take the studio and set up 10 or 12 shots at once for cropping in post.
28K is a great resolution for keying... LOL
perhaps it would work great in combination with that multi focus lens Which Adobe showed earlier.

Imagine a theatre with this (pre-warped) image filling 180+ degrees around you? Or imagine sitting in front of a giant 180 degree window to the outside world of the same size. Because they'd be virtually indistinguishable from one another to our eye...
Well 6K I can maybe see for more-or-less mainstream use, but 9K, 28K?
And develop 8 bodies with different sensors and all 'accessories' in less than 2 years?
Who's really up for 2.25 quadrillion possible camera configurations?
I'm with Stu; just give us "one" that works (really, really well).
Save the unique style choices for mobile phones marketing.
Who else had preferred 2 'bodies' (brains? really?) with compatible accessories instead of 8?

Yes... I do NOT want to work on even 3K images, let alone 28k. But I would like to see a $40million projector made by NASA projecting that image!
I get really frustrated when my frames are over 16MB in size...

RED is making me wait... I'll probably bite on the next offering from Canon.. whatever that is...

But cool thing here.... You just buy all the parts to make a DSLR.. and a Cinema Cam.... and then just rent the sensor you need for the gig.... use the HV20 for scouting... Sweet.
Then you could say you own a RED cam for rent... and just secure a sensor block when needed....
I just hope that FullFrame 35 and 120fps comes down in price in the next 2 years...which it should.. as the other guys put their crippled products out there.
I would say that ALL these products are hardly Rebel friendly..as the Rebel gear always has compromises.

For anybody wondering who this camera is for, 6x17 cameras traditionally have two types of users: landscape photographers, and photographers who do photos of giant groups (like schools).
Landscape photographers won't be interested in 25fps, but the "giant group" photographers will be. They can run the camera for a few seconds, and probably get one good shot where no one blinks. It's a tiny niche, to be sure...
Of course, there's always the crazy person market. This camera should do very well in that segment.
Just because you CAN create a 28k camera doesn't mean you SHOULD create a 28k camera.
This is getting ridiculous much like the DSLR manufacturers boasting about megapixels. As we've seen that has levelled out at around 9 to 12 megapixels. I think in motion it will level out at 4k with the odd bit of work at 8k for imax etc.
RED really has bitten off more than it can chew. Its almost as if they are trying to mesmerise us with more options in the hopes that we are distracted from the fact that they haven't positively improved the product
I beg to differ, David. 10MP gives you only an 8x12 print at 300dpi. 21MP gives you 12x18.
There is no getting around these numbers, and while most people wont print 12x18s, it's a relatively small print size. And it wont match Medium Format for quality. But it will be close.
The issue isnt to stop "megapixel" growth, it's only to make sure the SENSOR SIZE grows with the "megapixels".
I'll take 17MP on a full frame over 21MP on the same size sensor, any day. But I'll certainly take a Leaf 22 over an 11MP anything.
NOTHING "leveled out" at 12MP; you just need to know the point of diminishing returns.
I'm trying to think of a type of motion shooting that can't be done with RED's system....
I really can't think of any. Did they miss anything? What can't some form of this system do?
There isn't a single form that you are looking at that will be able to film a strobe light flashing that doesn't just PARTIALLY expose the frame.
So no filming police or emergency vehicles and no filming in dance clubs.

You don't need a large mega pixel count to print larger from a DSLR. There are diminishing returns and it starts at 12MP. The sensor has been the same size since DSLR development began, they've just packed more pixels in. So as I've said 12MP is the optimum MP count for the vast majority of DSLR cameras.
If you want to go higher, by alls means do that, nothing stopping you having a higher resolution DSLR, but the sharpness of lens et al will get you I'm afraid.
If you want a serious high quality digital images 20+ MP you are going to use a serious high quality delivery system, medium format digital.
Maybe it can record holograms with a special adapter, since currently you need many cameras surrounding the subject to do so, maybe this camera can do it all in one piece of equipment...
