Canon 500D
The rumored next-gen Digital Rebel, AKA the 500D, now has a face to the name. I don’t ordinarily post camera rumors, but I got excited when I saw the flip-out screen.
1080p HD video is one of the rumored features of this camera, and after my experience shooting with the 5D Mark II, I must say that an articulating screen like this is a must-have for a video-equipped DSLR.
Fortunately, it is probably also an easy case to make that an articulating display makes sense for any live-view DLSR, whether you’re shooting video or stills (the GH1 has one, but so does the video-free G1 of course), so let’s hope we see more screens like this.

With Canon's naming conventions; it will only cost 1/100th of a 5D, have 100 times more features and will only be considered to be a real camera by 0 of the people that spend their days stroking their cameras instead of shooting with them.
The flip out screen is awesome. My first digital camera was Canon's "prosumer" G1, which had a similar yet much smaller screen.
Canon kept the flip-out screens going on the G-series until the G8 or so (it's definitely gone with the G10).
I can't say enough how great it was to see what I was framing while shooting odd angles or by holding the camera above my head. What a great feature!
Lets hope that Canon learns some lessons from the 5Dm2 release... namely manual control and 24P.
I like the idea of the GH1 but if there is little to choose between the new Canon and the GH1 the Canon would be a better option because of the vast range of lens that are available.
This new Canon will hopefully push Nikon to bring out a 1080p version of the D90.
i REALLY hope this is actually what gets unveiled at the rumoured "event" taking place tomorrow. this camera would make a lot of sense to to market place right now. i know i'd love one. i know SO many people have been electrified by the 5DmkII and what it can do, but just can't afford it. Then there's the D90. Try subscribing to the d90 channel on vimeo, there's a new video posted every few minutes. it's really got people excited about making movies. but what about canon lens owners on a budget? personally i'd like a 60D for the size and build quality metal body, but a 500D? it'll sell like hotcakes and i for one will be happy to max out my credit card on it :)
hey, canonrumors just updated. looks like a press release leaked temporarily. to be called canon rebel t1i, 15mp, 50d size sensor and hd video. rumored 30fps@720p and 20fps@1080p. That doesn't make much sense. wonder what stu will say about it if it's confirmed
1080 @ 20fps?
....seriously....?
WTF Canon?
No, at this point If it turns out to be true I won't even get upset I'll just shrug it off as typical Planned obsolescence-product protection bullsh!t.
just read the DPR post.. it's all official. they screwed the pooch. 30fps. and 20fps.. wtf? maybe they'll get it right with the 60D?
They're not going to get it right with the 60D because they are actively avoiding frame-rates that filmmakers can use, no articulated screen - blatant product-line protection. Oh well, customer lost.
I had such high hopes for this camera. Stu, is it possible to have After Effects interpolate frames to make 20FPS 24FPS and still make it look decent?
I'm just in shock. 20FPS? 20?! Is that really the number the dart landed on?
20fps?
What a scummy company.
Its their prerogative to do what they will but I still feel like putting tacks in their feet.
Sounds like Canon needs to get a petition from users objecting to stupid
shortsighted design ideas that mimic what GM executives do in their board meetings!
If Canon execs had any brains for design, they could leap frog Nikon, Panasonic, et al if only they actually tried to give their customers what they want and need rather than some half baked, selfish proprietary, dead end designs.
Take the 5D, articulate the screen, improve the audio (provide for pro external mics, some audio control), use standard video frame rates like 24 fps, 60 fps, to make it a lot more attractive for both photo and video use. Being able to use the Canon camera lenses, along with the great video potential will attract hordes of customers.
