Ikonoskop A-cam dII

Funky 16mm camera maker Ikonoskop, known for their unconventional ergonomic camera designs, have announced a digital cinema camera called the A-cam dII.
- Super-16 sensor (slightly wider than Scarlet’s)
- 1920x1080 UPDATE: CCD, not CMOS!
- 1-60 fps
- Shoots uncompressed DNG or TIFF
- €6,950 (about US$9,800) with battery, 9mm f/1.5 lens and 80GB Memory Cartridge
Between this, Scarlet’s proposed specs/price, and the D90 it’s easy to see these offerings as salvos landing all around the same unscathed bullseye: a camera in the DSLR price range that takes DSLR glass and shoots raw motion files with little or no compression.

Yes, why is this so hard? All the technology exists out there, but no one seems to want to put it all together. Actually that's not true; I'm betting Red will get it right. But that's still at least a year away. The first one to do so at a palatable price will be huge winner.

Well they have one thing that RED doesn't - a clean, pretty design. I know, the RED stuff has it's own charm, and they're all about the INSIDE, but still...
shadowmaker, ask them for sample files, as that will help us all discover the possible workflows. Their docs are very lite on workflow info. Of course we are interested in providing a compressed RAW workflow for all D-Cinema cameras. I'm sure we could batch convert this stream as we do for ARRI, Dalsa, Vision Reseach and R3D.

Just a short video interview from IBC yesterday.
How long till the weird shearing from cmos becomes part of the language, it seems not so long ago that many video looks were unacceptable but then you get directors like Michael Mann breaking down these barriers. I am looking forward to the D90, I'll use it to make shorts and maybe use it for TV.
I agree, without seeing some example footage, can't get too excited about this. Yet.
The weird shearing may be become part of the language but it will still suck for those of us who need do insert stuff into it believably in post. The shearing breaks the structural integrity of the image.
Some specs and answers to questions from the IBC floor. Adopting the DNG open standard for recording will mean these guys can concentrate on making a good camera and allow post people to do their thing. There are some very heavy hitters backing DNG! From waht I can work out DNG post is supposedly supporting proxy workflows and a mild copression option.
1: Memory card will have an outboard data offloading card reader...USB2 at the moment...they are thinking maybe Esata as a possibility.
2. Nice to hold and solid
3. Viewfinder orientates vertically
4. battery loaded next to card under a cover at the rear
5. Audio two channels via lemo
6 HDMI out only but Black magic.AJA make a mini card for HDMI to HDSDi/SDi
7 OLED on dumb side with audio levels and menu...plays back pictures on this also...NICE!
8 Relying on DNG group to develop post solutions...no onboard proxies (I believe a proxy workflow is included in the early spec thoughts)
9 passive cooling...runs without a fan so little heat
10 cost of card uncertain but aggressively priced less than P2

The files are huge (80Gb for 12 min?) but let's hope the quality is worth it.
Stu did you ever own the Cinemek Adapter? If so, do you have any footage?
Tracey, I had and just sold (look back a few posts) a Go-35 which was similar in many ways to the Cinemek G35, which was quite delayed in its release.
Also wondering how well this thing will "build" into standard motion picture camera accessories. Can you put it on an Arri support and build follow focus, mattebox, onboard monitor, etc. around it? How well will such a rig handhold? Can you put an extension on the viewfinder? Can you alternatively build a lighter rig for handheld work that still contains mattebox and follow focus? Will it get front-heavy?
I checked around and asked a few questions, thinking I already have some great Canon lenses I'd want to use for this camera.
Turns out, "You can buy a-cam dII with the IMS mount and then get a canon EF adapter for the IMS mount from P+S Technik."
