Canon EOS 5D Mark II
In English:
The video mode on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is very exciting to filmmakers. It would be perfect with only two changes:
I hope that you might be able to add these features in a firmware update to the 5D Mark II. If not, please consider them for your next video-enabled DSLR.
- an option for 24 frames per second, the frame rate of film
- manual control of shutter, aperture, and ISO
Thanks!
How freaking cool is that? Thanks to Saru for the translation.

I copied and pasted the japanese text into babelfish to double check the translation and got the following.
"Video mode very splendidly is potato for the film manufacturer. But, furthermore that becomes perfect ones with the next two modifications, probably will be. * With option correspondence to 24 frames/second (as for 24fps standard scene speed of movie) * Shutter, contraction and the manual control of ISO These functions you have asked the fact that it is mounted on 5D Mark II by firmware update ardently. When it is impossible, mounting on the next video mode equipped single-lens reflex camera no soldier/finishing examination. We ask may!"
Here's hoping yahoo's babelfish isn't very accurate.
Hahaha, babelfish is doing well but not quite as humanly ...
Anyway I already sent this blog's link to Canon Japan and got a response, saying they will "consider".
Hope they really would.
I think a computer-generated translation being that far off is ample evidence that saru's Japanese is sound. Still, "Video mode very splendidly is potato for the film manufacturer"—you can't argue with that!
laughing at the google ads on the side now :P
Yeah potato! Stu, maybe you already reached Jim from RED because the scheduled a new announcement for Dec. 3rd.
Announcement here:

Hey, Stu, how come you don't mention 25fps? For us in Europe 25fps is more important than 24fps.
I'll also use this oppertunity to thank you for a fantastic blog. It's both educational and inspirational :-)
I want 24 fps. But I NEED manual control of aperture and ISO. It is absolutely maddening that they have disabled these features. I pre-ordered the camera when they announced it and should have it in the next few days. It is such a mixed feeling to have so much power, yet have my creative hands tied behind my back. ARRRGH!
Just came across some rolling shutter video/discussion here:

Hey Stu!
How about we request 23.976 fps instead of 24.0 and save ourselves a lot of headaches in post?
Is a far, far easier thing to retime 23.976 (aka 23.98) to 24.000 by printing frame for frame and doing a minor audio tweak.
Resynching 24.0 to 23.976 for playout on, like, ALL video playback NTSC devices is a PAIN. Or working with the fudge-it systems as well.
Just a thought,

I'm picking my battles here and going out of my way to be extremely concise in my request. The 24 to 23.976 dance, while not fun, is done every day and well understood by post people. Every major film in the US is still shot true 24, not 23.976.
How about they build a real video camera around this chip???
Yaay! 5D MkII manual aperture hack, from commenter Chris18 at
http://vimeo.com/2497848:
…but the only way to control it, and get the same aperture you had for stills, is to 1) set the aperture in Av or M mode, 2) hold the DOF preview button, and while doing so unlock the lens and turn it slightly. Aperture should read 00. 3) Open live view to start your movie mode, and begin recording. When you do it this way your aperture will be locked, and the movie mode will use it, and because the lens is slightly unlocked, and the electric connection severed, the camera can't reset the aperture.
"Every major film in the US is still shot true 24, not 23.976."
Just figured I'd register one data point to the contrary (or not, depending on the definition of "major film" and "in the US"): The Forbidden Kingdom was shot primarily at 23.976fps on a Panavision Genesis recording to HDCam SR.
