The Eagle Has Landed

Welcome to the new ProLost.

I'm sure some things are broken, or lame, or brolameken.

I'll be expermineting with layout and features and whatnot, so let me know what you like and don't like.

I'm most curious about your comment-posting experience. On Blogger I did not allow annonymous comments, and I'd like to keep things the same here, which means (I think) that you need to create an account and log in to post. Let me know how that treats you.

oh, I found a way to post comments without registering

Comment posting seems to be working fine without the need to create an account.

Nice new digs. Familiar enough but sufficiently different. Regarding comments, I like how blogspot "knew" me. Other than that, hope you enjoy your new home - enjoy this virtual bottle of Kelt Cognac. Which way to the cigar lounge?

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBrian

ok, I had noticed an issue in the way the header and sidebar loaded waaaay before the content, Like content would come afterwards as a huge chunk. Its seems to be fixed byut not sure

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeeMo

I like!

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEstebe Verde

Looks good. Already notice that the typography is a lot more attractive. Looking forward to see what SquareSpace can do.

We'll see what happens when I hit "create," but it looks like I can technically post "anonymously." That is, I typed in my name in the "author" field but I guess it could be anything, right?

Hey Stu - testing this out without an account. Let me know if it goes through. So far the site looks delectable.

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjayse

attempting the very first test post. please forgive me...

FIRST!!!

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjohnxlewis

Comment form appeared, and it's moderated, as you already know. Strange, it doesn't ask for a valid e-mail (for what is worth). "Design by commitee" is Evil, but I'd still suggest Helvetica, Arial Bold for header and possibly post titles.

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeeMo

The look is a touch basic at the moment, but otherwise everything looks pretty good. Looking forwards to seeing what you do with the place and your experiences with squarespace, I'm looking at it for a hosting a new clients website potentially.

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTechnex

Nice, seems to work well.

Not sure what you mean by creating an account. You just fill in the blanks and away you go.

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRocket Boy

So far, commenting seems to be going well...Though it's requiring me to write out my entire URL along with the "http://" business. HTTP is so 1998 (grin).

I'm about to be joining the Squarespace diaspora myself, been messing around with themes during renders.

Design's nice & clean.

Cheers

New site looks clean and organized. I've been reading your blog for a while, I just got your book yesterday from Amazon. Can't wait to see your short that was shot with the 5D Mark II.

First time posting- hey why not do it on the new blog!

March 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Shivers

The new place looks good so far. Always liked the simplicity of your old blog, and I think as long as that translates into the new one, it should be great! So far it looks very clean.
I never wanted to sign up to blogspot because yours was the only blog I read, but now I can finally say thanks for the many informative reads and interesting posts!
Am awaiting new entries :D

The twitter box is empty on the individual entry page, and I think the header needs a little spicing up. But its all still very clean and readable.

Hey Stu, enjoying the new site re-design but I have been enjoying your book a lot more (on holiday, minimal internet). Its very readable and you have done a really great job, my only wish is that I had been pointed to it in my last year of uni instead of getting bogged down in heavy design theory texts. It would make a great textbook for students. Props were its due stu :)

Hey Stu, your new site is nice. Pls attach me follow you.

Your info is very best for me.

Thank for all.

To be honest, I prefer not having to login to post a comment. There were plenty of times I wanted to leave me two cents or praise of one of your previous posts, but didn't want to have to signup and log in to do so.

That reminds me; thanks for every one of your previous posts about post production and colour correction. I've been trying my best to use AE for onlining, even though it's a serious pain in the butt (I still don't feel comfortable moving back and forth between Premiere and AE).

very slick

Looks good. But one thing, where are the Kanjis?

You know? This here:

Don't know ir they go through the Comment, but I hope so.

Hi Stu, overall I like the new look, although I'd consider moving the 'goods' column to the left, so that the actual blog posts are centered (if that's possible in squarespace of course) I find it a bit distracting to have to 'cross a column' to reach previous blog posts. Otherwise it looks very nice.

Good going with this new blog Stu! Looks good!

Very nice and clean layout, easier to follow, better organized. Loads very quickly (under 5 seconds at 6:30 am Eastern). Needs a photo.

Looking good!!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCalvin Sun

another first time poster here:

about the new layout:
i like it a lot, good overview and somehow easier to grasp with one glimpse. maybe the left hand column could be a tiny bit wider.

about comments:
i can understand why you dont want to allow annonymous comments, but on the other hand i hate to create accounts for every site i visit. i would have posted before on some topics but just wanted to avoid a blogger account.

last but not least, i enjoy reading your site a lot over the past years and it has helped me many way in both, thoughts about digital post in general and specific technicals issues. so thanks a lot for all your time! (just wanted to say that before the comments get switched to registered-only again ;)

I really like it. Tight and tidy - just how i like it. And after seeing your Twitt on Squarespace (which i had never heard of) i am switching too. Thanks for a great blog!!

March 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterColin

Thanks Stu! I went ahead and looked into Squarespace, based on your recommendation. It's very impressive, and in my opinion worth at least 25 cents a day. I always check your site for the latest and greatest.

All the Best,

Looks good to me - the new blog

I think you will like Squarespace. I've been using it for over a year and I love it. I need to upgrade to v5 but I've been too busy lately to get the makeover completed.

enjoy

Hi Stu,

Another first time poster here as well. I like anon comments. We used to host our Media Renegades blog on blogger but recently moved over to wordpress and it's much the same in the anon comments side of things. There is a plugin called askimet that does a pretty good job of fending off the spam for us. You need a wordpress api key, all it really means is that you have to sign up for a wordpress account, then they somehow monitor all the comments that come in on all blogs and when one looks like junk and appears in a few places it automaticly stops them.

I guess that spam is a problem we will have to put up with without the almighty google watching our backs for us, but I must say it makes it much quicker and more inviting to post a comment when it's like this. Do you have support for gravitar as well, would be cool to see peoples profile photos when they comment, makes it all a bit more personal.

Love the layout, it looks good a change for the better. Can I just say thanks for all the great work you have put into this blog, I'm an avid subscriber through google reader, your pearls of wisdom have helped me out many a time, as well as provoking new ways of thinking.

Thanks

IMHO the two "side" columns draw too much attention, so much so that it affects readability of the (top) posts. Maybe using left-content-right would balance this out although that would be a bit "so last year".

Anyway good luck tweaking the templates.

stu man, you're gonna lose all your SEO value unless you set up 301 redirects man! you should have kept up the old site but stopped updating it and have the last post direct you to here!!

March 21, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermark

Hi stu.

I don't know exactly what system your using for your blog, but both wordpress and joomla have plugins that will allow "global" logins. So if you have a openid or a google id you can log into your site without having to make a completely new account. This would streamline the comment process for those of us on the grid and help keep spam out.
