Keep NYC Rebel-friendly

From the picturenewyork.org press release:

NEW YORK CITY: Picture New York WITHOUT pictures of New York. In one of the most photographed cities in the world, photographers and filmmakers, both professional and amateur, would be shut down by proposed regulations making it illegal for them to film or tape in NYC without a permit and a million dollars of insurance.

The proposed regulations would affect much of the small scale filming and photography in the city. In addition to artists, those making Industrials, fashion, wedding and architectural photographs could need a permit. The regulations would require a permit for 5 people with one tripod who shoot for 10 minutes or more in one place. (And this would include set up and break down!). A film school graduate with a camcorder, four friends and a dream could have to pay comparable insurance fees with HBO to shoot in New York City. Even parents making home movies in public parks could fall under the new rules.

That's so ... dumb.

Not that I will be touched by these new rules over here in good old germany, but that doesn't change the fact.

I can't believe that the Guys who wrote this thing thought about it for longer than 5 secs.

Maybe a lot of them will not be able to film their own kids playing in a park without paying a lot of dollars.

That's so wrong.

sorry, forgot something.

Am I allowed to undersign the petition from germany? Because I can't change the country...

I shot my first short in NYC. It was the most rebel friendly place in the world to do it. They even shut down an alley way for my DV short. What a loss to indie filmmaking in the US if this happens.

All cities should be like the old NYC in this regard, too bad new NYC is going to be like every other major municipality and kill a big chunk of film production. Now it'll be like San Francisco. I guess there always New Zealand.

Hi Stu- LOVE the book and the blog. Thanks for picking up on this- it is a major issue here in NY these days and needs all the support it can get!

the film student example is a little misleading. i went to film school in new york years ago and since you're insured through the school we got free permits from the city. or is this changing as well?
