The Shot You Can Make Gallery
Many people commented on The Shot You Can Make that they’d love to see this as an iPhone app. Great idea, but I can’t make that happen quickly, so I looked around for other options. It turns out the photo gallery feature of Apple’s MobileMe service (AKA the litmus test of whether you’re totally Steve Jobs’s bitch) has some impressive features that work pretty well for presenting whichever camera and lens combinations I’ve pre-made using the simulator. It’s not the same as a dedicated app that would allow you to enter arbitrary camera backs, focal lengths, and f-stops, but it does do some cool stuff.
From your browser, visit gallery.me.com/prolost. You can browse the pre-rendered images of course. You can also subscribe to an RSS feed to be notified of updates. Images you have not yet viewed are marked with a blue dot.
But perhaps the coolest feature is for those who have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Download the free MobileMe Gallery app if you don’t have it already, and add “prolost” as a friend (you don’t need a MobileMe account of your own for this). You can now browse the SYCM gallery using a lovely graphical interface. You’ll see the familiar blue dot next to albums with new images, so it’s easy to see when I’ve made an update. Better still, the app keeps a local cache of images you’ve viewed, so you can continue to browse them even if you’re not connected to a network.
I’m not ruling out the possibility that this could be a real app someday, but in the meantime, this gives you a taste of SYCM on the go, and it’s free. Do check it out, as I’ve added some of the most requested cameras, including the RED fixed-lens Scarlet and the Sony EX1. I’ve also created a special gallery reserved for images that perfectly match the baseline shot’s AOV, so you can get a more direct comparison of DOF performance on this setup.
Enjoy, and keep those requests coming for cameras and lenses.

Great work! May I suggest a few f2.0 examples for MFT to reflect the Olympus 14-35 / 35-100 f2.0 zooms? For instance, in the "baseline AOVs", would love to see the GH2 89.5@f2.0.
This is great! A lot of apps are database oriented, ie. all the data exists in the app, you just select which camera and lens you are using. So it feels a lot like an iPhone app.
Q: Is there anything to differentiate the simulations for the 7D, 60D, and 550D?
Xavier — done. Bradbell.tv: there's either no difference among those cameras, or not one worth creating separate images for.
Bitchin'! Finally a useful use for mobile me gallery. The turtleneck is strong with you.
very cool, may I request a 72.8mm f1.8 on the GH2, which would be one of the more common focal lengths close to the GH2's equivalent to a standard lens (28mm -> 53.2mm) used with the 1:1 crop mode (2.6x crop in 1080p).
Let me be clear on this, are you asking for a 28mm ƒ1.8 on the GH2 with 1:1 crop mode enabled? All I need for that is the actual physical dimensions of the area of the sensor used for the crop mode.
sorry, I have no idea
okay, well my editing period ran out, but I guess a rough calculation could give you 8.84mm x 4.977mm, but that's assuming I got the calculations right, which I might not have (that's based on a 1.9x crop with a 2.6x zoom on top of that). I might have gotten that wrong. That's assuming a crop and a zoom are the same thing mathematically, right?
16:9 Pixels: 4976/1920 = 2.5917
Millimeters: 17.8 * (1/2.5917) = 6.8681
So I'm going with 6.87 x 3.87
This is the most useful thing i've seen in ages. Thanks Stu.
Any chance you could run the following proposed red mini primes through on the 2/3rd scarlet?
6.5mm T1.9
8mm T1.5
16mm T1.5
Would really help in deciding between the two cameras.
Hi Stu,
Any chance of seeing the Voightlander f/0.95 25mm lens on MFT? I know a lot of people (me included) have bought this as their standard prime for the AF100.
Thanks!
Hey Stu, Awesome work BTW. Didn't realise you were so macified!
Any chance of some 7D simulations? Perhaps with the Thrifty 50, variations on the 24-105 f4 L, or/and the 16-35 f2.8 L? Am i asking too much ;)
I've added some crop mode samples for the GH2, as well as the Voightlander.
Toby, I'll add those lenses you've requested to the 60D album, which should be accurate for the 7D as well.
Edward, I'll add those lenses when there's any indication that a 2/3" interchangeable-lens Scarlet is in production. Right now it's not even listed on RED's site as a product.
Hey Stu, I too thought there was no evidence that there was a an interchangeable scarlet. Until a week or so ago. http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53839
the 6th post down Jannard says there is.
However, that's still not to say that those lenses will be produced, or that the interchangeable scarlet is even 2/3rds...
wow, thanks Stu.
Thanks Stu, this is absolutely great.
When you get a chance these 2 lenses for Canon 5D Mark II would be great:
28mm f/2.8
35mm f/2.8
Thanks for making this.
Have you seen Artemis iPhone app (sort of director viewfinder)?
Or pCam (also iPhone app) under Field of view (Preview button).
Its kind of in the same ballpark
Big fan of both Artemis and pCam. I've had pCam since my Palm V!
You've listed my top podcasters as well, and CoffeeGeek has been invaluable in my search for consistently fantastic coffee.
What about the Sony FS100? Is it the same as the 60D?
Do you still have this posted somewhere since mobile.me no longer exists? Thanks!
Working on ideas for that.
